THE ROUNDNESS OF THE EARTH

He has created the Heavens and the Earth for Truth. He wraps the night up in the day, and wraps the day up in the night. (Qur'an, 39:5)

In the Qur'an, the words used for describing the universe are quite remarkable. The Arabic word which is translated as "to wrap" in the above verse is "takwir." In English, it means "to make one thing lap over another, folded up as a garment that is laid away." For instance, in Arabic dictionaries this word is used for the action of wrapping one thing around another, in the way that a turban is put on. The information given in the verse about the day and the night wrapping each other up includes accurate information about the shape of the world. This can be true only if the Earth is round. This means that in the Qur'an, which was revealed in the 7th century, the roundness of the world was hinted at.

However, it should be remembered that the understanding of astronomy of the time perceived the world differently. It was then thought that the world was a flat plane and all scientific calculations and explanations were based on this belief. However, the Glorious Qur'an has employed the most definitive words when it came to describing the universe. These facts, which we could only correctly fathom in our century, have been in the Qur'an for a vast length of time.

THE MIRACLE OF IRON

Iron is one of the elements highlighted in the Qur'an. In Surat al-Hadid, meaning Iron, we are informed:

And We also sent down iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind… (Qur'an, 57:25)

Iron ingot

The word "anzalna," translated as "sent down" and used for iron in the verse, could be thought of having a metaphorical meaning to explain that iron has been given to benefit people. But, when we take into consideration the literal meaning of the word, which is, "being physically sent down from the sky," as in the case of rain and Sun rays, we realize that this verse implies a very significant scientific miracle. Because, modern astronomical findings have disclosed that the iron found in our world has come from giant stars in outer space.38

Not only the iron on earth, but also the iron in the entire Solar System, comes from outer space, since the temperature in the Sun is inadequate for the formation of iron. The sun has a surface temperature of 6,000 degrees Celsius, and a core temperature of approximately 20 million degrees. Iron can only be produced in much larger stars than the Sun, where the temperature reaches a few hundred million degrees. When the amount of iron exceeds a certain level in a star, the star can no longer accommodate it, and it eventually explodes in what is called a "nova" or a "supernova." These explosions make it possible for iron to be given off into space.39

One scientific source provides the following information on this subject:

There is also evidence for older supernova events: Enhanced levels of iron-60 in deep-sea sediments have been interpreted as indications that a supernova explosion occurred within 90 light-years of the sun about 5 million years ago. Iron-60 is a radioactive isotope of iron, formed in supernova explosions, which decays with a half life of 1.5 million years. An enhanced presence of this isotope in a geologic layer indicates the recent nucleosynthesis of elements nearby in space and their subsequent transport to the earth (perhaps as part of dust grains).40

Surat al-Hadid is the 57th in the Qur’an. The numerical value of the word “al-Hadid” in Arabic is 57. The numerical value of “hadid” on its own is 26. As can be seen from the periodic table to the side, 26 is the number of the iron atom. With the verse revealed in Surat al-Hadid Almighty Allah indicates how iron formed, and with the mathematical code contained in the verse He reveals to us a scientific miracle.

All this shows that iron did not form on the Earth, but was carried from Supernovas, and was "sent down," as stated in the verse. It is clear that this fact could not have been known in the 7th century, when the Qur'an was revealed. Nevertheless, this fact is related in the Qur'an, the Word of Allah, Who encompasses all things in His infinite knowledge.

Astronomy has also revealed that other elements also formed outside the Earth. In the expression "We also sent down iron" in the verse, the word "also" may well be referring to that idea. However, the fact that the verse specifically mentions iron is quite astounding, considering that these discoveries were made at the end of the 20th century. In his book Nature's Destiny, the well-known microbiologist Michael Denton emphasizes the importance of iron:

Of all the metals there is none more essential to life than iron. It is the accumulation of iron in the center of a star which triggers a supernova explosion and the subsequent scattering of the vital atoms of life throughout the cosmos. It was the drawing by gravity of iron atoms to the center of the primeval earth that generated the heat which caused the initial chemical differentiation of the earth, the outgassing of the early atmosphere, and ultimately the formation of the hydrosphere. It is molten iron in the center of the earth which, acting like a gigantic dynamo, generates the earth's magnetic field, which in turn creates the Van Allen radiation belts that shield the earth's surface from destructive high-energy-penetrating cosmic radiation and preserve the crucial ozone layer from cosmic ray destruction…

Without the iron atom, there would be no carbon-based life in the cosmos; no supernovae, no heating of the primitive earth, no atmosphere or hydrosphere. There would be no protective magnetic field, no Van Allen radiation belts, no ozone layer, no metal to make hemoglobin [in human blood], no metal to tame the reactivity of oxygen, and no oxidative metabolism.

The intriguing and intimate relationship between life and iron, between the red color of blood and the dying of some distant star, not only indicates the relevance of metals to biology but also the biocentricity of the cosmos…41

This account clearly indicates the importance of the iron atom. The fact that particular attention is drawn to iron in the Qur'an also emphasises the importance of the element. In addition, there is another hidden truth in the Qur'an which draws attention to the importance of iron: Surat al-Hadid 25, which refers to iron, contains two rather interesting mathematical codes.

"Al- Hadid" is the 57th sura in the Qur'an. The abjad of the word "Al-Hadid" in Arabic, when the numerological values of its letters are added up, is also 57. (For abjad calculations see the section on Numerological Calculations (Abjad) in the Qur'an.)

The numerological value of the word "hadid" alone is 26. And 26 is the atomic number of iron.

Moreover, iron oxide particles were used in a cancer treatment in recent months and positive developments were observed. A team led by Dr. Andreas Jordan, at the world famous Charité Hospital in Germany, succeeded in destroying cancer cells with this new technique developed for the treatment of cancer-magnetic fluid hyperthermia (high temperature magnetic liquid). As a result of this technique, first performed on the 26-year-old Nikolaus H., no new cancer cells were observed in the patient in the following three months.

This method of treatment can be summarised as follows:

1. A liquid containing iron oxide particles is injected into the tumour by means of a special syringe. These particles spread throughout the tumour cells. This liquid consists of thousands of millions of particles, 1,000 times smaller than the red blood corpuscles, of iron oxide in 1 cm3 that can easily flow through all blood vessels.42

2. The patient is then placed in a machine with a powerful magnetic field.

3. This magnetic field, applied externally, begins to set the iron particles in the tumour in motion. During this time the temperature in the tumour containing the iron oxide particles rises by up to 45 degrees.

In a few minutes the cancer cells, unable to protect themselves from the heat, are either weakened or destroyed. The tumour may then be completely eradicated with subsequent chemotherapy.43

In this treatment it is only the cancer cells that are affected by the magnetic field, since only they contain the iron oxide particles. The spread of this technique is a major development in the treatment of this potentially lethal disease. In the treatment of such a widespread disease as cancer, the use of the expression "iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind" (Qur'an, 57:25) in the Qur'an is particularly noteworthy. Indeed, in that verse, the Qur'an may be indicating the benefits of iron for human health. (Allah knows best.)

THE MIRACLE OF HONEY

Your Lord revealed to the bees: "Build dwellings in the mountains and the trees, and also in the structures which men erect. Then eat from every kind of fruit and travel the paths of your Lord, which have been made easy for you to follow." From inside them comes a drink of varying colours, containing healing for mankind. There is certainly a Sign in that for people who reflect. (Qur'an, 16:69)

Honey is a "healing for men" as stated in the verses above. Nowadays, apiculture and bee products have opened a new branch of research in scientifically advanced parts of the world. Other benefits of honey may be described as below:

Easily digested: Because sugar molecules in honey can convert into other sugars (e.g. fructose to glucose), honey is easily digested by the most sensitive stomachs, despite its high acid content. It helps kidneys and intestines to function better.

Rapidly diffuses through the blood; is a quick energy source: When accompanied by mild water, honey diffuses into the bloodstream in seven minutes. Its free sugar molecules make the brain function better since the brain is the largest consumer of sugar. Honey is a natural composition of sugars like glucose and fructose. According to recent research, this unique mixture of sugars is the most effective means to remove fatigue and increase athletic performance.

The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of honey were revealed as a result of clinical observations and research. Honey is exceedingly effective in painlessly cleaning up infection and dead cells in these regions and in the development of new tissues. The use of honey as a medicine is mentioned in the most ancient writings. In the present day, doctors and scientists are rediscovering the effectiveness of honey in the treatment of wounds.

Dr. Peter Molan, a leading researcher into honey for the last 20 years and a professor of biochemistry at New Zealand’s University of Waikato, says this about the antimicrobial properties of honey:

Randomized trials have shown that honey is more effective in controlling infection in burn wounds than silver sulphadiazine, the antibacterial ointment most widely used on burns in hospitals. (“Honey Against Infected Skin Lesions,” www.apitherapy.com/honeysk.htm.)

Supports blood formation: Honey provides an important part of the energy needed by the body for blood formation. In addition, it helps in cleansing the blood. It has some positive effects in regulating and facilitating blood circulation. It also functions as a protection against capillary problems and arteriosclerosis.

Does not accommodate bacteria: This bactericide (bacteria-killing) property of honey is named "the inhibition effect." There are various reasons of this anti-microbial property of the honey. Some examples are: the high sugar content that limit the amount of water microorganisms need for growth, its high acidity (low pH) and composition which deprive bacteria from nitrogen necessary for reproduction. The existence of hydrogen peroxide as well as antioxidants in the honey prevents bacteria growth.

Antioxidant: Everyone who wants to live a healthier life should consume antioxidants. Those are the components in cells that get rid of harmful byproducts of normal metabolic functions. These elements inhibit destructive chemical reactions that cause spoilage of food and many chronic illnesses. Researchers believe food products rich in antioxidants may prevent heart problems and cancer. Strong antioxidants are present in honey content: Pinocembrin, pinobaxin, chrisin and galagin. Pinocembrin is an antioxidant that merely exists in the honey.108

Vitamin and mineral depot: Honey is composed of sugars like glucose and fructose and minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. It contains vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3 all of which change according to the qualities of the nectar and pollen. Besides the above, copper, iodine, and zinc are also present, albeit in small quantities.

Honey is used in healing wounds:

- When used in treatment of wounds, thanks to its ability to absorb moisture from the air, honey facilitates healing process and prevents scarring. This is because honey stimulates the growth of epithelial cells that form the new skin cover over a healed wound. In this way, even in case of large wounds, honey may eliminate the need for tissue transplantation.

- Honey stimulates the regrowth of tissue involved in the healing process. It stimulates the formation of new blood capillaries and the growth of fibroblasts that replace the connective tissue of the deeper layer of the skin and produce the collagen fibres that give strength to the repair.

- Honey has an anti-inflammatory action, which reduces the swelling around a wound. This improves circulation and thus hastens the healing process. It also reduces pain.

- Honey does not stick to the underlying wound tissues, so there is no tearing away of newly formed tissue, and no pain, when dressings are changed.

- Thanks to its aforementioned antimicrobial property, honey provides a protective barrier to prevent wounds becoming infected. It also rapidly clears any existing infection from wounds. It is fully effective, even with antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Unlike antiseptics and antibiotics, there is no impairment of the healing process through adverse effects on wound tissues.109

It can easily be seen from this information that honey has great "healing" properties. This is undoubtedly one of the miracles of the Qur'an Allah, Who is Exalted in Power, has revealed.

The Fly's Eye Is a Source of Inspiration

The Fly's Eye Is a Source of Inspiration
for New Medical Imaging Systems

HARUN YAHYA

An inexpensive optical system inspired by the design in the fly's eye is leading to new medical imaging devices.

The benefits provided by the use of magnetic imaging devices in medical diagnosis and therapy are indisputable. Israeli scientists are currently working to develop a new device in this field. They hope that this new apparatus, which is still in the development stage, will offer a significant advantage over those devices presently in use. That advantage is that it will be much more economical than the imaging technology employed in existing devices. Therefore, in the event that this project becomes a reality people will have the opportunity of having frequent health scans. The current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or potentially damaging X-ray mammography are expensive in these terms:

In order to make use of light in medical imaging the small number of photons (light particles) emitted from the object being scanned have to be perceptible. This represents something of a problem in existing devices. The tissue in front of the object being scanned causes noise in the image by blurring light. In the methods currently employed this problem is overcome with expensive cameras with special shutters that block the "noise" caused by the light scattered by the tissue. That increases costs.

Researchers Joseph Rosen and David Abookasis from Ben-Gurion University in Israel have now come up with a new method. Scientists collect a number of images of the object being scanned and combine these in such a way as to produce a good image of the object. So, they get an average of the images, and the light scattered by the tissue, that is, the "noise" in the image, becomes eliminated. This combination represents a concrete solution to the difficulties encountered in existing devices. The design that constitutes the intellectual source behind this combinatorial solution is no man-made device, however. In seeking this solution the scientists were inspired by the "compound eye" that flies have been using for hundreds of millions of years. Indeed, the title they gave their study is "Seeing through biological tissues using the fly eye principle."(1)

Taking the design in the fly eye as their starting point, the scientists prepared a microlens array of 132 tiny lenses. To test their ideas, the researchers took two chicken breasts and hid a wing bone between them. They then illuminated one side of the meat with low-power optic laser and placed the microlens array on the other side. The images from the microlens were transmitted to a digital camera with a conventional lens. A computer subtracted most of the noise produced by the scattered light, revealing a clearer image of the concealed wing bone.

" 'With more microlenses and other refinements, it should be possible to boost the resolution,' Rosen says. 'With investment to develop it further, our system could in a year be seeing the bones in the palm of the hand or the root of a tooth.' " (2)

Rosen states that this device, which works on the principle of the fly eye, is promising, and imparts the welcome news that with the use of this device the uncomfortable endoscopes or "pill cameras" that have to be swallowed in abdomen scans will be a thing of the past.

The Design in the Fly's Eye

A fly moving through the air is wonderfully agile. It can change direction in a moment in reaction to the smallest movement directed towards it. It can choose whether to land on the floor, wall or ceiling of a room. The fact that the fly possesses a very superior visual system is of great importance in this. Close inspection of the fly immediately gives an idea of the reason for this agility. The fly's eye possesses a design known as the "compound eye" and which permits it to see through a large number of lenses and at a wide angle.

Image of the fly eye taken under an electron microscope

A fly's compound eye consists of a large number of optical units, each with its own optic lens, and produces a large number of images. Neural circuits from each unit take an average of the image, and a clearer image than the parasite ridden background is obtained. The fly's eye can perceive a light vibration 330 times a second. From that point of view, it is six times more sensitive than the human eye. (3) At the same time it can also detect ultraviolet frequencies in the light spectrum that are invisible to us. This system makes it easy for flies to evade their enemies, especially in dark environments.

The compound eye of the fly is a most important organ that plays a role in the visual system, a vital function with regard to the animal's survival. When this organ is examined, we see lenses that specially diffuse the light form a concave surface that provides a wide field of view and concentrates the image on one centre. The edges of these optical units on the surface are hexagonal. Thanks to their hexagonal shape, the units are located contiguously to one another. In this way no unwelcome gaps that would occur if other geometrical shapes were used, arise; the most productive use of the area is made. Although the rays from a large number of lenses would be expected to lead to a confused picture, this never happens, and the fly can see a wide field in a single image.
There is a superior design in the fly eye. This engineering principle, which has been used in human beings for the last few hundred years, has been used in flies of around 390 million years. A more general look at natural history shows that the compound eye design (in trilobites in the Cambrian period) goes back some 530 million years.

Flies have had this eye structure since the day they came into being.

To Whom Does the Design in the Fly's Eye Belong?

The question that arises is this: scientists imitate the design in the fly's eye in developing their devices. The fact tat the fly eye is used as a source of inspiration in modern technology is a clear indication of its superior design. The various components in the eye can be seen to have been arranged for a particular purpose. So how did the fly come by this design? Who arranged all these components in this way and designed the fly eye?

All the arrangements in the fly's eye show that this design was bestowed on the insect by an entity with a superior intellect. There is no doubt that it is Almighty God, the Lord of the Worlds, Who created the fly together with this perfect visual system. This superior creation in the fly is a sign of God's infinite might.

In one verse from the Qur'an God reveals:

Humanity! an example has been made, so listen to it carefully. Those whom you call upon besides God are not even able to create a single fly, even if they were to join together to do it. And if a fly steals something from them, they cannot get it back. How feeble are both the seeker and the sought! (Qur'an, 22:73)

As she was switching the light off before going to bed , she could not shake off the feeling that she had looked into an abyss and that things would never be quite the same again .She headed to her bed with heavy footsteps that
violated the silence that prevailed the room , the oceanic darkness that filled her heart to the core overflowed and drowned her surroundings .She was one of those unfortunate souls who was predestined to walk in the roads of heartbreak ,melancholy and desolation. She was one of those chosen few who were gifted with a truly amorous heart that was always on the trail ,probing for someone who would be the living form of softness and for a heart that would be the ultimate incarnation of love .True ,her quest had been rewarded with the granting of her wish but, as ever, the bliss of contentment will -in the fullness of time- cease to last.
She laid her head on the pillow and let out a sigh that emerged from a pain so overwhelmingly excruciating. The bedcover embraced her as a refuge that would shelter her from the ruthlessness of reality. She snuggled into it in a unrewarding endeavour to hold on to something concrete that could toughen her existence seeing that the gravity in her life has been shattered. Her head kept spinning and her body was writhing in trepidation of the other translucent kind of world to which she felt herself involuntarily heading . It was a world of conspicuously striking images where the colours were more vivid and glowing. The familiarity of these prior images dawned upon her for they were reminiscences of times gone by. The scenes were homogeneous and recognizable for they belonged to a life she has formerly lived. She wondered whether what she was going through could be ascribed to the realms of extra-sensory perception and déjà vu. Could this lavishing façade be no more than a figment of a worn-out imagination or an inevitable consequence of her wishful thinking ?It was an unanswered question that remained unasked . Still, it all seemed so heartbreakingly real that she dared not stir lest it all fades away for a second time .
Suddenly ,she stared in astonishment for she beheld him standing by her side watching the sun setting, diving
deep into the sea to concurrently rise upon a different land .It was a genuine miniature of life with all its vicissitudes and paradoxes . The redness of the sky sprang out from an afresh, unhealed wound that was renewed with each and every passing day .They were playing with the sand and building castles that replicated those they have weaved with their dreams up in the sky. Their spirits were enlivened with the vigour of love and the sweetness of innocence. In a swift turn of the scenes , she saw herself dancing with him on their wedding day .Their hearts along with their bodies were dancing on the melody of their favourite song and on the rhythm of their heartbeat .They kept murmuring the words they knew so well while he whispered to her that the sheer poetry of their love will rise above the encumbering reality of their world . Images kept bouncing out of nowhere and she went back in time to the serendipitous day when they first met. There was a chemistry between them that was impossible for them to circumvent or overlook. Another poignant image appeared to her in order to strike a chord and evoke in her the memory of days she never failed to remember . It was a visual rendering of one of those countless nights in which they were strolling on the beach ,breathing in the scent of the sea and relishing the sight of the consecrating stars that were arbitrarily scattered all over the sky .

In fact , the images were beyond enumeration but some were eminent and discernible while others were quite shadowy. Nonetheless, the trivia was all there for her to see and single out. Whereas she was walking at the heart of these contiguous images ,she glimpsed him lying there on the bed of the hospital like a withering rose that life has ruthlessly enfeebled and she was there beside him with outpouring tears that refused to subside .He was urging her to bear the impending grief with audacity and told her that he read some time ago a sentence which states that "only those who love without desire shall be granted strength in their darkest hour" .The bitter end was due and the recognition of her loss tugged at her heartstrings His love was her only means of her survival for he was the life and soul of her very existence and by his death she has been given life in death .Actually, she was no more than an image of still life.

The blurred images were drifting farther and farther apart and she felt herself coming back to a world she tremendously loathed. Truly, "all that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream ".Only at that particular moment did she appreciate the poem of Edgar Allan Poe in which he, unintentionally, verifies her days. She aroused from the apparent oblivion of her sleep and headed to the window where she gazed at the moon with a tearful eye and addressed the following heartrending words to her beloved .

Dear,
Though they say that seeing is believing
I can see that you are not here
But I know that feeling is never deceiving
And I feel your presence ,so soft and sheer
I have been forced to wear this weary road
With a woebegone heart that bears no more the load
Still ,our love was never a lifetime event
I shall yearn for the life to come ,
This must be the way it was all meant
Your soul will always embrace mine
Together forever ,we shall stay till the end of time
And though death may do us part ,
The memory of you will always linger ….
To soothe a very much broken heart

A life of shadows ,shadows we thought we knew so well
We lived shrouded within the memory of one throbbing wound
Haunted by the pain ,unable to let go ,unable to conclude
Captured within two different realms ,two fearsome worlds
Blinded from a truth that the darkness ruthlessly unfolds

Veiled within the shadows are the pits where we once fell
Forced to upfront our fears and the things we could not tell
The victims of our struggle were the memories we ceased to borrow
They were the withering days that turned out to be so hollow
Our deferred dreams died as we strived along the way
At some point of time ,there was not so much to say

Walking through the rain with the agony of remembering
Falling every second from the pain of comprehending
Leaving behind desolate footsteps in a path that was never trodden before
Spreading the remnants of the hopes we failed to ensure
Always was there the pungent recognition of what we did waste
The poignancy of our heartache was all that was there to taste
And, thus, we kept tracing a bittersweet mirage of what could have been
Despite the many times we stumbled ,
we kept chasing a dream we failed to win
And now we are still running after the shadows of the shadow
Still ,we are mistaking them for real
Now we are no more innocent nor ardent nor callow
Standing at a standstill , no more able to truly feel

Bruised in thy tears my soul, shed them no more
Let the heart weep in silence
Let this deep, deep wound know its cure
Let the unshed tears be forever kept in my secret well
Let the pain be kept still and sealed
With the things I dared not tell

Let thy bruises be hidden from the gaping eye
Let your cry be stifled,
Let them not hear you sigh

Let he who shares my grief know no pain
This world is a home for scars
We `ll leave one day, and never come again
Fear not the coming days
Nor the forming storm,
The heat of love will embrace that bruised soul
It will keep you warm

I will leave my heart in a memory
And keep walking down that painful path
I will live, heartless, in this heartless world
And try to have no wrath

Bruised in thy tears once more
And I can find you no balm
For you have lost your twin soul,
In the middle of the storm
You have lost your soul mate,
The echo of your cry
This is the plan of fate
And I am no longer I

I must trust that this hurt will go away,
and that this broken heart will heal itself
I must trust this dark night to bring me the day,
that the pain will enrich my human wealth

I must trust this world to be less cruel
and that I will be somehow stronger
I must trust that the soulless will have a soul,
that love will know no hunger

The more things change, the more they feel the same
The more the heart feels,
the more it knows the bitter taste of pain
The more I live, the less I understand
how the dreams are wounded,
how the choices slip from my very hand

It is not black, not white;
I have known it as a space of grey
And though the sun sometimes smiles
The frown of the night comes to end the day
It is not evil and it is not benign
But it crushes this sad soul that I call mine

Those pearl-like tears are shed
But the heart mourns yet in silence
The eyes suck all the water drops
And it, alone, I know, lives in arid dryness
